BI(O)CYCLE
Reimagining an urban street through material reuse, prototyping and circular design.
Building a 1:1 chair prototype from waste materials which then informed a masterplan to redesign an existing street as ‘car-less’. This addressed the lifecycle of construction materials to challenge our choices as designers.

BI(O)CYCLE began with the construction of a 1:1 chair prototype from discarded bicycle materials. The material experiment then informed a masterplan to redesign an existing street as car-less, exploring the lifecycle of construction materials and challenging how waste materials can be reconsidered through design.
The existing street was reconsidered as a greener, pedestrian-focused public space.

Bicycle-waste flows were studied to understand the availability of discarded tyres as a construction material.

A 1:1 chair prototype tested discarded bicycle components through use and deformation.

Tyres, inner tubes and bicycle components were assembled into a functional full-scale prototype.

The prototype uses tension and compression to respond to the weight and position of the body.

The material principles developed through the chair were translated into modular assemblies at architectural scale.
